Insider Tips for Budget-Friendly Summer Camps on the Main Line

As a camp owner and a mother, I know how important it is for kids to have a fun and enriching summer experience. Besides factors like location and programming, budget is a big factor in choosing a camp for your family. Living here on the Main Line, it is no surprise there is an abundance of quality camps, each with its own focus, offering, and cost. Often the decision comes down to your family budget. Therefore, I want to share some insider tips to help you find summer camp options to fit into your budget right here in the Philadelphia and Main Line areas.

1. Ask About discounts:

Don't be afraid to ask about discounts! Many camps offer sibling discounts if you're enrolling multiple kids or multi-week discounts if you book a longer session or both simultaneously. It never hurts to inquire about any special pricing they might have.

2. Take Advantage of Tax Deductions:

Did you know you can deduct summer camp costs using the Child and Dependent Care Credit on your taxes? The total expenses that you may use to calculate the credit may not be more than $3,000 (for one qualifying individual) or $6,000 (for two or more qualifying individuals). For more details, visit [IRS Topic No. 602](https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc602). Be sure to keep all those camp receipts and paperwork handy.

3. Enroll in Free CIT Programs:

If you've got a rising 9th or 10th grader, check to see which camps offer free CIT (Counselor in Training) leadership programs. It's an awesome way for your teen to gain valuable leadership experience while attending camp at no cost to you.

4. Barter Your Skills:

Some camps may be willing to trade your skills or services in exchange for a discounted or complimentary session. If you're a nurse, lifeguard, or have other relevant experience, it's worth asking if they need an extra hand for these especially hard-to-find positions.

5. Apply for Scholarships and Financial Assistance:

The American Camp Association is a great resource listing camps in Pennsylvania and across the country that offer scholarships or financial assistance for day and residential camps. Check out their article on How to Afford Camp on their website.

6. Look into State Tuition Assistance Programs:

Look into state tuition assistance programs, as well as local nonprofits, religious organizations, and foundations. A quick online search can reveal some hidden gems in our area.

7. Apply a Military Discount:

For our military families, many camps extend special discounts or assistance to those serving or who have served our country. Be sure to inquire about any veteran or active-duty benefits they might offer.
