We know this may be your child's first camp experience, and as parents ourselves, we understand how much thought goes into this decision. At DEAN Adventure Camps, our Trailblazer Discoverers program is specifically designed for preschool and kindergarten-aged children (Rising PreK-K). FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Is this camp right for my 4-year-old who hasn't been to camp before?
Yes! Discoverers is designed as a gentle introduction to summer camp. Our caring counselors are trained in early childhood education and create a safe, supportive environment where first-time campers thrive. We build trust gradually through predictable routines, lots of play, and responsive support.
-
Does my child need to be 4 years old to attend?
Yes. Campers must be at least 4 years old by their first day of camp. For example, a child with a June 14th birthday would be eligible to join us starting June 15th.
-
What's the adult-to-child ratio?
We maintain small group sizes with low camper-to-counselor ratios to ensure every child receives individual attention and support. Our staff are trained specifically in early childhood development.
-
What if my child isn't fully potty trained yet?
All Discoverers campers must be fully toilet trained before attending camp. This means they can recognize when they need to use the bathroom, manage their clothing independently, clean themselves, and wash their hands. Our counselors can provide reminders and support bathroom routines, but children should be comfortable with the process before starting camp.
-
What if my child gets upset or needs extra support?
Our staff are trained in co-regulation and provide gentle, responsive support throughout the day. We work closely with families before camp begins to understand each child's needs, communication style, and comfort strategies. If your child needs extra support during camp, we'll communicate with you and work together to ensure they feel safe and cared for.
-
Can my child attend part-time or half-day?
Discoverers runs as full-day programming to provide the most enriching experience and support working families. However, we understand that young children have different needs. Please contact us to discuss your family's specific situation.
-
How is Discoverers different from preschool or daycare?
Unlike traditional preschool or daycare, Discoverers is a hands-on, play-based adventure camp where children explore new skills through woodworking, culinary arts, innovation labs, and outdoor play—all within a developmentally appropriate, joyful environment. We focus on doing, making, and discovering rather than academic instruction.
-
What does a typical week look like?
Each week has a different theme that connects activities across all our studios. For example, during "Transportation Week," campers might build cardboard cars in our woodworking studio, bake bus-shaped cookies in culinary, create traffic lights in our innovation lab, and play transportation-themed games outdoors. Themes provide coherence while allowing for plenty of child-directed play and exploration.
-
What should my child wear to camp?
Dress for mess and movement! Campers should wear comfortable clothes (Your DEAN tee shirt is perfect!) that can get dirty (paint, glue, outdoor play), closed-toe shoes, and sun-safe clothing. We provide smocks for messier activities, but clothes may still get stained. Send your DEAN water bottle with your child’s name and sunscreen daily.
-
Will my child make friends?
Absolutely! Building friendships is a core part of the Discoverers experience. Through circle time, group projects, and collaborative play, children develop social skills and genuine connections. Many families return year after year, and friendships often extend beyond summer.
-
What if my child gets upset during the day?
Our counselors are trained in supporting young children through big emotions. We use gentle co-regulation strategies, provide comfort, and help children identify and express their feelings. If your child is having difficulty adjusting, we'll communicate with you and work together to support them. Most children settle in beautifully within the first few days.
-
My child has never been to camp before. Will they be okay?
Yes! Many Discoverers are first-time campers. Our counselors create a welcoming, predictable environment with consistent routines that help children feel safe. We take extra time during the first few days to help new campers learn the rhythms of camp, make friends, and build confidence.
-
Can my child bring a comfort item from home?
Absolutely. If your child has a special stuffed animal, blanket, or other comfort item that helps them feel secure, they're welcome to bring it to camp. We'll help them find a safe spot to keep it during activities.
