WRITING & ILLUSTRATION CAMP

Campers start the week with a blank page and one question: “What story will you tell?” Nobody assigns a topic. Counselors guide the way, but campers make every creative choice, from the first character sketch to the final word.

Campers follow the four steps working authors and illustrators follow:

  • The Idea – Dreaming & Planning: Ideas start with two questions: who is it about, and what happens? Campers brainstorm characters, map the plot on a story mountain (hook, exposition, problem, rising action, climax, and resolution), and storyboard each page before they write a word.
  • The Draft – Writing & Sketching: Writers write, and artists draw. Campers put words and rough sketches on the page and build a full draft from beginning to end.
  • The Feedback – Sharing & Revising: Campers have their pages reviewed by peers and counselors, who give feedback and suggest edits.
  • The Illustrations – Drawing & Designing: Campers learn tracing, inking, and color theory, then lay out their pages and design a cover for print.

Along the way, campers pitch ideas, confer with each other, and cheer on one another's progress. That planning method and the writing process give your child a tool for the reports and essays to come, and the habit of revising carries into group projects at school.

After camp, we send each book to our publisher, and a professionally bound copy of your camper's book, comic, or graphic novel arrives at your home (allow at least 8 weeks). Campers-turned-authors leave knowing the writing process, equipped with stronger drawing skills and a creative voice of their own, with a finished book for the family bookshelf on its way.

SKILLS & TECHNIQUES

Each week, campers write, draw, and design their own stories, learning key skills and mindsets. The specific skills taught vary by program, giving each camper the chance to explore different sides of storytelling and illustration:

  • Foundation Skills: Creativity as they invent characters and plots of their own, collaboration as they trade pages and give feedback in editor’s circles, and responsibility as they carry a story from first idea to finished pages. They also build resilience as they revise their drafts, learning that strong stories come from writing, rethinking, and rewriting.
  • Technical Abilities: Character development, plot mapping on a story mountain, storyboarding, drafting and revising, character sheets, thumbnailing, panel layout, lettering and speech bubbles, tracing, inking, color theory, page layout, and cover design

As they write and illustrate, campers also strengthen essential character skills:

  • Collaboration: Giving and receiving feedback with fellow authors and illustrators
  • Resilience and Self-Regulation: Revising their work draft after draft, discovering that great stories often come from trying, adjusting, and trying again

By the end of the week, every camper has a finished story on its way to print, along with a growing set of writing and drawing techniques and the confidence to tell stories in their own voice.

DEAN campers creating graphic novels and comics at Writing & Illustration Camp

GRAPHIC NOVEL & COMIC CREATORS

Your child has read every comic and graphic novel on the shelf. This week, they make their own. Campers become the writers and illustrators, from picking the genre to inking the pages.

Campers draw character sheets and thumbnail every page. They learn how panel size controls a scene's pace and how speech bubbles and onomatopoeias like “BAM!” and “WHOOSH!” bring pages to life.

The week ends with the camper showcase, where creators proudly display their comics and graphic novels, ready for publication. Allow 8+ weeks for your child’s bound book to arrive at home.

This hands-on Graphic Novel & Comic program teaches the visual storytelling behind real comic strips, graphic novels, and manga, all through a race to the next issue. Campers learn to slow down for a steady line, fix what isn’t working, and finish something they’re proud of.

Achievers (rising grades 3-4) learn comic and graphic novel basics and get their first illustration skills. They design a hero, plan a short comic, and learn how comics tell a story. First-timers finish a short comic. Returning campers build on the skills they already have. They tackle longer comics or start a brand-new one to publish.

Navigators (rising grades 5-7) build on their creative writing skills, shape more complex characters and plot twists, revise their drafts with counselors and peers, and refine their illustrations. Returning Navigators have the opportunity to take on a new style, write longer comics or graphic novels, and try new illustration techniques.

DREAM, WRITE, PUBLISH

A publisher is waiting on the next great story, and the author is you. Campers become authors signed to DEAN Press, and their first book is due at the end of the week. The publisher wants an original story with a memorable main character, a problem to solve, and pictures on every page.

To meet the deadline, authors brainstorm ideas, develop their characters, and map a plot with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They draft their story, then meet with fellow authors to give and receive feedback before they revise. They trace, illustrate, and use color theory on each page, then design the layout from the cover to the pages in between. Each step moves the story closer to the press. The week ends at the camper showcase, where authors proudly display their books, ready to go off to the publisher.

This hands-on Writing & Illustration program teaches the storytelling and read-aloud skills behind real picture books and chapter books, all through a publishing deadline for rising 3rd-7th graders. Allow 8+ weeks for your child's bound book to arrive at home.
